What Is Mindful Meditation?
I constantly get asked what is mindful meditation all about and how does it work.
Today I’m going to answer it by shedding some light on how meditation and being more mindful in everyday life has the power to transform your health, happiness, relationships, finances, and every other area of my life.
How I Define Mindfulness
There are quite a few different definitions around for mindfulness but what it means to me is, “to be aware of the present moment with an attitude of non-judgment and acceptance”. It’s not something that needs to be forced or worked hard at to achieve, in fact it’s quite the opposite.
Being mindful of the present moment is rather quite natural as all it takes is a slight switch in focus and attention. Right now while you are reading this and thinking about what is being said, there is a part of you that is aware of everything, that notices what’s going on in real-time in the present moment.
I call that part of the mind the “observer” within us. It’s always there, it’s just that we get so easily distracted by what’s going on in our mind and body that we forget to slow down enough to be able to step back from the busy mind and have a different perspective on what’s going on.
One of the things that really helps to be more mindful anytime and anywhere we want is to focus on something that exists in the moment like our body or our breath. As a general rule the mind tends to live in either the past or the future, rather than the present. That’s why we get anxious or depressed because we’re lost in thoughts that have nothing to do with where we are now and what’s actually happening in the moment.
When we start to re-train the mind to be more present focused, then we automatically start to drop many of the neurosis that keep us stuck in fear, pain or suffering. All these things are created in the mind, so it makes sense that if we change the way relate to our mind, then we change the way our life looks and feels.
