There are many different types of meditation techniques but they can be broken up into two main types, active and passive. The ones that many are familiar with are the ‘passive’ meditations which involve sitting down, closing your eyes and focusing on something internal. Active meditations are those that involve a physical activity such as jogging, dancing, shaking or pretty much anything that involves the body moving. Movement allows for the release of tension from the body and the mind and is a great way to make a transition into stillness and silence.
On the other hand, mindfulness can be applied to anything, anywhere and anytime as it only requires that you pay attention to what is happening in the present moment. So you can be mindful while breathing, mindful while walking, mindful while driving a car, mindful while eating and so it goes for any activity.
To know what meditation technique is right for you it is best to have a go at different types of techniques or mindfulness activities until you find one that resonates with you. Give any meditation technique you try at least a 7-day trial period before moving onto another. A good gauge is if it is fun for you and you look forward to doing it. Meditation is meant to be playful and not taken seriously. If you can have fun with it, then it will grow in leaps and bounds.
