Easy Meditation Techniques For Beginners
Today I share with you some easy meditation techniques that are simple to learn and can be used anytime and anywhere for instant calm and clarity.
The video below will step you through my personal favorites that will help you to shrug off tiredness, fogginess in the brain, or simply to just clear your head so you can focus easier.
The Power of Meditation
So just exactly how does something as simple as meditation help us think and feel better come from? This is something that I used to think about a lot when I first started meditating. While I often felt clear headed and revitalized at the end of my meditations, it always intrigued me how it worked.
It wasn’t until I started to look more into the scientific side of meditation that the answers became clearer. Rather than bore you to tears with many years of research and discovery, let me give you the shortened version of what I discovered. When we meditate, it enables us to move from higher frequency brain waves to lower frequency brain waves, which activates various areas in the brain.
These frequencies range from the Beta state (13 to 30Hz), which is the state that most of us function in to perform our daily tasks, through to Delta state (1-3Hz) which is normally associated with deep sleep. There are other states such as Gamma, Alpha and Theta, but these will do for now.
What meditation does is help our brain waves to slow down out of the ‘thinking’ or ‘busy’ mind, which results in a feeling of calm and peacefulness. In realty, what’s happening behind the scenes is that the two hemispheres of the brain are starting to synchronize and come into balance.
The slower the brain wave frequencies that we can attain while staying alert during meditation, the more deeply relaxed and rejuvenated we will feel. As an example, Tibetan monks who have been meditating for years and years can reach the Delta (deep sleep brain wave function) while still be present and alert, yet totally quiet in their mind and relaxed.
That’s why even 5 minutes of focused meditation that helps you to step back from the busy mind and slow down your brain waves can bring so many benefits. It all comes from slowing down the frequencies of your brain waves.
And if you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. When we’re stressed, anxious or worried about things, our mind is typically hype-active, which means our brain waves are moving at a higher frequency. That then has a flow on effect on our nervous system and physical body, which is why we get fatigued, or in some cases even get ill.
That’s why meditation is so powerful when you learn to do it the right way. The wrong way is to sit down and expect to become an instant zen monk when you’ve never been shown how to meditate before. Trying to figure out meditation yourself, is like trying to play the piano if you have no idea what you’re doing – it’s not going to work.
Always take the time to learn from someone who’s been meditating for some time and is getting results from it. Otherwise you might end up feeling jaded and miss-out on having your own amazing experiences of what meditation can do for you.
