Does Everyone Need A Meditation Teacher To Meditate Deeply?
Meditation can be quite confusing when you’re first starting out. That’s why I’m glad I had a teacher to help clear roadblocks and refine my meditation practice. Without having someone to guide me I don’t think that I would be still meditating today and enjoying all the magic and miracles it has brought to my life.
Before I started meditating, my life was a mess. I’d had a series of unfortunate incidents occur which left me in a permanent state of anxiety and stress. From sleepless nights to dread-filled days I felt like I was caught in the middle of an endless nightmare. That’s when I started looking for natural ways to help get my life back in order.
My research led me to meditation. I knew enough about myself to recognize that reading about it or listening to an audio just wasn’t going to cut it for me. I needed to learn from someone that had a lot of experience meditating and could answer all my questions as I progressed with my meditation journey.
Now I’m not saying that you may need to find a meditation teacher to learn to meditate. These days there’s just about a new meditation app coming out every other day on iTunes or Google Play. When I got started these things didn’t exist, so learning from a real live human was more commonly accepted.
What things like meditation apps, books, or audio’s lack though is the personal touch. I was able to ask questions, get feedback and fine tune my meditation practice simply because a had a teacher there to help.
The thing is that you can practice meditation exercises for weeks, months, or even years and gain plenty of benefits without having a teacher provide you with additional instructions. But at a certain point along the path of your meditation journey, you may encounter difficulties you don’t know how to handle yourself.
Or you may start to have experiences of a spiritual or expanded awareness nature that you can’t explain but you want to know more about them or how to go deeper. To continue moving forward at such times so that you can refine your meditation practice and not get disheartened, you would need to find a meditation teacher.
Before you can find a teacher you need to think about what type of teacher would work best for you. There are many types of meditation teachers who are trained in various styles of meditation ranging from a more spiritual based understanding through to a more scientific based approach.
Once you identify the type of teacher you want then it’s just a matter of doing your research until you find one that you feel comfortable with. So whether you are looking for a more spiritual meditation teacher or one that can help you to overcome mental, physical or emotional roadblocks, there are plenty to choose from.
Often times, the questions we have about meditation are simply validations that we seek or frustrations that we want to move beyond. In either of these instances it’s normally just our mind playing tricks with us and if we can take those thoughts into our meditations they can be released without even needing to be answered.
If you are looking for a teach though the key is to find someone that resonates with you and who is walking their talk and not just pretending to be someone their not. Get to know a bit about them and their meditation journey. That will give you some insight into whether or not they might be compatible with you.
I met my teacher through a friend that did a 6-week meditation course and recommended I start with her. This was the perfect teacher for me at that time and since then I have been divinely guided from one teacher to the next. I know now that I will always have a teacher because there is always going to be someone that knows more than I do from which I can learn.
Don’t be too concerned if you start looking for a teacher and don’t find one right away because there is a saying that, “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear”, which I have always found to be true. Just remember to keep your mind and heart open to be ready to receive them when they turn up.
